Abstract

This paper presents a rigorous thermal performance analysis of a 5.83 MWh alumina-based Thermal Energy Storage System (TESS) designed for a 400 kW steam turbine application. Utilizing a unique interlocking tongue-and-groove brick geometry (236 bricks per layer), the system operates at a peak temperature of 1300°C. We detail the commissioning ramp-up schedule implemented to ensure the longevity of the  heating elements and maintain alumina structural integrity. A numerical simulation, utilizing X-Y coordinate mapping of the brick core, was performed to evaluate heat transfer efficiency. Results indicate a discharge efficiency of 42.5% and demonstrate the effectiveness of a 50 mm Fiberfrax expansion joint in preventing thermal bypass. This work contributes a novel dataset on thermal signal stability in refractory storage systems, providing a framework for optimizing high-temperature power cycles.
